Room to Read

Beacon Literacy and Room to Read share a passion for breaking the cycle of poverty through education and literacy.  Together we believe in giving a hand up instead of a hand out.

After Beacon Literacy CEO, Lani Donaldson read John Wood's book "Leaving Microsoft to Change the World", she too was inspired to do more.  Wood created Room to Read, as a result of his inspiration to change the world.  Lani created the Lani Donaldson Literacy Foundation as her way of reaching out.

John Wood, founder and executive chairman of Room to Read, launched the Room to Read program after a trek through Nepal where he visited several local schools.  He was amazed by the warmth and enthusiasm of the students and teachers, but also saddened by the shocking lack of resources. Driven to help, John quit his senior executive position with Microsoft and built a global team to work with rural villages to build sustainable solutions to their educational challenges.

We believe that this is an exciting time for literacy. We are aware that there are just too many people who suffer from a reading difficulty. This is a celebration of all that Room to Read and Beacon Literacy stand for. We hope to help many by creating awareness and fundraising here in Canada.
